In the US, the vast majority of trains are hauled by diesel locomotives.

A program to overhaul locomotives to make them conform to the latest atmospheric emission standards is due to be completed during 2007, reducing emissions of NOX by two thirds and of CO2 and other particles by half. What's more, the locomotives run on fuel with a very low sulfur content.
